I can remember looking through family photo albums as a kid and being amazed at the stories that I saw on the pages.  It was a window into a world where my parents, aunts, and uncles were all children, my grandparents were just starting out with their new families, and my brother and I weren't even a thought yet.  The idea that your children will one day open a gorgeous leather bound album to see into the story of the day their parents were married lights me up.  I am absolutely honored to tell your story.

"I absolutely love what I do! If there’s a camera in my
hand, there’s probably a smile on my face."

More so than just shooting photography, I love capturing moments in life. Moments that are authentic and real. Images that when looked at years later, are relived with all the emotion and feeling that was felt when it first happened.

Living in San Diego, but traveling to wherever my camera takes me, my mornings include a healthy dose of coffee and time spent with my wife. My afternoons are filled with surfing, skydiving, motorcycle riding, shooting tons of photography, and a continual drive to find new adventures and experiences. Evenings are most appreciated cooking dinner for friends, opening a bottle of red wine, and spending time living and loving on the people around me. My family is everything to me, and I would not be the man I am today without them. Traveling is a passion of mine and if there’s an opportunity to go, I’ll be on the next plane, train, or bus! Life is so amazing and new adventures are just waiting for us to go out and find them!

Your wedding day is incredibly important to me and I’m definitely the guy that you’ll catch behind the camera with a tear in his eye. Can’t help it, I’ll meet you, we’ll hang out, and I’ll feel like it’s two of my friends up there getting married!

Thank you so much for reaching out to me, I'm so excited to hear about you and your plans!

I love getting on the phone to get to know you!  If you're up for it, leave your phone number and I'll call you!

1) How long have you been in business?  Do you shoot full-time?

I began shooting ten years ago and am currently shooting my eleventh full-time season. Throughout the years I have shot all sorts of different locations and situations. When a challenge comes my way, I am confident and prepared to deal with it and continue to capture your wedding day.

2) How many weddings have you shot? Have you done many that were similar to mine in size and style?

It’s hard to keep this answer current as I am actively shooting weddings. I accept about 25 weddings per year. Over the ten years, I have shot over 250 weddings and including second-shooting for friends, over 400 total weddings. Chances are I have shot a wedding similar in size and style to your wedding, but definitely ask me when we talk and I can let you know.

3) How far in advance do I need to book with you?

As soon as you’ve decided that I am the right photographer for you, book me. I have couples often book six months to a year in advance, but have had couples book two years out in some cases to ensure availability. Most importantly, the earlier you book, the better the chances that I’ll be available for your wedding date. Only a retainer is required at booking. ($1,000)

4) Why did you become a photographer?  Specifically weddings?

Photography has always been a passion of  mine ever since I can remember. Even as a kid I was always the one taking pictures at family events and of my friends. I went to school for a business degree first to make sure that I knew the ins and outs of operating my own company, and then applied those principles to a business focused on photography. Weddings were an easy fit because I love people, celebrations, and more than anything am honored by the way that my images will be treasured by you in the years to come. That has pushed me even more to hone my skills and raise my level of photography.

5) Have you ever worked at my wedding site before? If not, do you plan to visit in advance?

Again, definitely ask this when we sit down for coffee. I have shot at many locations, but it is possible that I have not shot at yours. Because of this I make sure to scout out every location that I will be shooting ahead of time. Whether that be a special trip to see the venue and meet with the main coordinator to a day before walk through, I will know when and where the light will be and how I can most effectively create incredible images for you. Even venues that I have shot numerous times change throughout the season so a day before walkthrough is always done.

 6) What do you think distinguishes you from other photographers?

Past bride and grooms, coordinators, and venues send their couples to me when they know that more than just a photographer will due, but a couple is looking for a genuine experience. I realize that my presence has a huge effect on the vibe of our wedding day. With that in mind, I focus on keeping positivity and good vibes in everything that I do as we work through your day. This frees me to be myself with you and your guests, blending effortlessly in with your event, and becoming a welcome friend on any dance floor. All of this combines to create a feeling of comfort for you and your guests that will shine through in every image I create.

7) What type of equipment do you use?

I shoot all Sony equipment with my main camera being an A7RII. All of my lenses are top of the line Sony FE Series and all accessories are top of the line as well. When it comes to gear I’m a bit of a geek and love to nerd out about the latest and greatest in photography. Staying up to date with new gear is important in getting you the best images possible.

8) Do you have backup equipment unless your main equipment goes down?

Whether you go with DMP or another photographer, make sure to ask this question! There have been numerous nightmare stories about photographer’s cameras going down and not having backup gear. We ALWAYS carry backup gear and when one camera goes down, another top of the line camera is there in moments to keep shooting with zero down time.

9) Can I give you a list of specific shots we would like?

Back to the super high communication.  Before your wedding, you will receive an email asking you to fill out a questionnaire. All sorts of other questions will be asked so that we can best be prepared for your wedding day and a shot list is one of them. We will talk extensively about this before your wedding. While we attempt to shoot anything and everything on the day of your wedding, we use a shot list to make sure that the elements that are most important to you are captured.

10) Are you the photographer who will shoot my wedding? If so, will you have any assistants with you on that day? If not, who will be taking the pictures and can I meet them before my wedding?

Yes, I am the photographer that will be shooting your wedding. Likely, your package will include another photographer that I assign based on your needs and wedding.

11) How will you (and your assistants) be dressed?

We look good! We dress like one of your guests might. Different based on the vibe of your wedding, but normally a dress shirt, dress slacks, and dress shoes.

12) If my wedding site is out of your area, do you charge a travel fee and what does that cover?

Yes. Our travel fees are determined on a number of factors. We can talk more about this based on your individual needs.

13) Are you photographing other events on the same day as mine?

No. Your wedding is my focus and I fully delve into the story telling process of your day.  I cannot do that if I have other shoots to worry about.

14) Is it okay if other people take photos while you’re taking photos?

Yes. During all parts of the ceremony and reception, anyone is free to shoot to their hearts content. The only point at which I ask for it to be just myself and you will be during the first look and romantic portraits. Having other cameras there causes distractions and takes away from creating stunning emotion filled images. Other than that, friends and family can shoot away and should!

15) If my event lasts longer than expected, will you stay? Is there an additional charge?

We do charge for additional hours although we normally do not push this too hard. We are there to tell your wedding day’s story. If the event goes over by 45 mins or so, we will for sure stay and make sure that we complete the story!

16) How long after the wedding will I get the proofs? Will they be viewable online? On a CD?

Our turn-around time is three weeks. First, your images will be released to you in an online gallery. You can view them and mark any image numbers for us to make private if you would like. Then we release the gallery for your guests to view, download, and order from. No need for you to pass around a proof book. You will also be sent a download link to download all of your final hi-res images.

17) How much of a deposit do you require and when is it due? Do you offer a payment plan?

A $1,000 retainer is due upon booking. This holds that day for you on our calendar and initiates the booking process. The remaining balance is split into two payments; 60 days before your wedding and 30 days before your wedding.

18) How do you backup my images?  Are they in multiple locations?  Are they safe?

Your images are beyond safe with us! When I arrive back from your wedding, I immediately upload your images to our computer system. The images are then copied to two external hard drives. Ultimately, your wedding images are stored on three servers around the United States. If you ever lose or misplace your files in the years to come, we will have them safe and sound within 24 hours!

19) Do you carry liability insurance?

David Manning Photographers carries the industry best of $3,000,000 policy. I have never needed to use it, but find so much comfort in knowing that it’s there!
